Faith Friday: The Continuous Good Deed

There are three very important points in this hadith: doing good deeds, continuity and quantity. The Prophet didn't mention the "size" of those deeds to emphasise that Allah (subhanahu wa taala) loves good deeds regardless of their size and quantity and more importantly, He loves the ones that are done continuously. After all, raindrops make an ocean and one raindrop creates a ripple effect.

Nona's Henna Night & Nikah

Tuesday, December 25, 2012

Image Hosted by

I love having a blog. It's like keeping a journal except I can share it with the world so people can relate to me as a person, first and foremost, and then as a Muslim. Two of my childhood friends got married this year.  Vivy tied the knot in June and a few days ago it was Nona's turn, alhamdulillah. The galore began with Nona's Moroccan-themed henna night (malam berinai) which was held on Wednesday, solemnisation (nikah) on Thursday and the receptions on Friday and Sunday (Mateen's side).

When God Doesn't Give What You Want

Sunday, December 23, 2012

Tired of trials and unanswered prayers?
Do you think the Creator and Sustainer of the whole universe cannot give you what you want?
You must realise that when He gives there's wisdom in it and when He withholds there's wisdom in it too.

"And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - for them is forgiveness and noble provision."
{Surah al-Haj, 22:50}

The key to opening the doors of Allah's mercy and bounty is

Style Sunday: Nona's Bridal Shower

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Image Hosted by

December is truly wedding season in Malaysia and another one of my friends is getting married this month. Although throwing a bridal shower is not a traditional Malay custom many Malay bride-to-be's choose to have one to add more joy to the anticipation of getting married. Ireena, whom we call Nona, invited me to her beautiful bridal shower at the Grand Hyatt hotel and I was thrilled to attend a girl's only get-together after a long week at work.

Faith Friday: No Limbs No Worries

Saturday, December 08, 2012

When my sister told me about an inspiring man with no limbs I knew I had to find out more about him.

No limbs? I can't even imagine life without hands, I thought to myself.

I spent hours watching Nick Vujicic's motivational talks, including the ones in which he spoke about Christianity. I find many of the concepts discussed by him are similar to what can be found in Islam as well. Most of his motivational talks are easy to relate to regardless of one's faith. I watched him in awe when he demonstrated how he would get back up after falling down. "If a man with no limbs can get back up, why can't you?" he said.

UNRIBA: Emancipate Yourself

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

"Islam is a way of life."

Muslims say that all the time because our faith in Allah subhanahu wa taala impacts every aspect of our lives. That may sound overbearing to some people but in fact, we are in need of guidance in every aspect of our lives and in my study of Islam thus far there is one common theme: purity.

Islam calls for the purity of the heart, mind, body and soul. This is achieved by being mindful of the things we consume and the activities we do. For instance, to have a sound heart we must stay away from obscenity and vulgarity. To be physically healthy we must eat in moderation and avoid food that is not clean. Similarly, to have a pure and wholesome life we have to stay away from corruption and injustice.

Riba or interest is seen as a form of injustice in Islam but unfortunately it's almost inevitable these days. Riba has infiltrated into everything in this dunya

As part of their CEMAS (Campaign for the Emancipation of Money and Society) campaign, Crescent Collective has produced a short documentary on how youths in Malaysia feel about living in a riba-based economy with capitalism as the main driving force. I think it's a great effort to raise awareness about something we tend to sweep underneath the rug.

The goal of Islam is to liberate the human race from the proverbial ball and chains of this world. Everyone is a slave but at least we can choose God to be our one and only Master.

Style Sunday: Iconic Women Awards Night

Sunday, December 02, 2012

Last Friday night I attended the Anugerah Wanita Ikon 2011/12 (Iconic Women 2011/12 Awards) which was hosted by local magazine, Wanita, and graced by Her Royal Highness Queen Haminah. My sister was one of the recipients of the awards that night due to outstanding academic achievements, alhamdulillah. There were two types of awards - Wanita Ikon (Iconic Woman) and Gadis Ikon (Iconic Young Lady) - and my sister is now the reigning Gadis Ikon Pendidikan 2011/12 (Iconic Young Lady - Academic category). I've got more pictures from the night if you'd like to see them!
